Two Minute Read: Porn Pedallers revocation is a bad look for British Cycling – and the UCI

BRITISH CYCLING, SQUEAKY-CLEAN ARBITERS OF THE SPORT IN THE UK, HAVE REVOKED THE AFFILIATION OF A CLUB COMPRISED OF ADULT ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY WORKERS.

Wind your neck in, British Cycling. At a time when a former Team Sky and BC doctor is under medical tribunal on charges of purchasing testosterone, it’s not a good look to be excluding people based on tenuous and outdated moral judgements about their jobs. Especially when the purpose of those people’s involvement in cycling includes, among other things, raising money for charity.

For clarity, KONM is making no suggestion or accusation that BC are guilty of anything in the Dr Richard Freeman case, but it’s hardly an ideal moment to seize the figurative high ground, even inadvertently. BC, of course, will point to UCI rules – indeed, they’ve already done so:

In all probability, the bureaucrat who made this decision had no intention of creating a social media storm, and was likely just observing dull rules in the manner dull bureaucrats tend to observe dull rules: dully. With extreme dullness.

Nevertheless, a storm is the result. And they’ve brought it upon themselves: the UCI for inserting such a caveat in their rules, and BC for cravenly applying it. The whole episode reflects poorly on a pair of organisations with little reason to exhibit self-righteousness.

BC are not entangled in Operation Aderlass, but along with the Freeman tribunal, the recent doping case in Austria surely indicates there are more pressing concerns than the fact a small group of their pedallers peddles porn? If only they and the UCI were so assiduous in applying every other rule in their handbook.

All that aside, has it escaped their combined attention that it’s 2019? The president of Brazil is literally posting pornographic images to his timeline and publicly asking what a golden shower is. If there’s anyone with a pulse who hasn’t watched a porn video by now, well, KONM isn’t sure that’s a person worth bothering with. Besides, is there any room for such a puritan streak in a sport whose participants quite openly urinate and even defecate in public spaces?

Some will rightly point out that the adult entertainment industry can be misogynistic and exploitative, and KONM completely accepts this without any attempt at rebuttal. But perhaps BC, the UCI, and the sport’s administrators as a whole, aren’t particularly well-placed to cast this type of judgement on a group of cyclists who aren’t ashamed of their profession.

Get down off the high horse and let the Porn Pedallers pedal.
